You have probably heard a lot about chakras lately – it seems like everywhere you look they are talked about as the key to “raising your vibration”, being more mindful, or even drawing more abundance into your life. Let’s dig a little into learning what chakras are and how you can keep yours optimized to fuel your creative projects!
So, Exactly What Are Chakras?
The Sanskrit word chakra can be literally translated as “wheel” and there are typically considered to be seven of these wheels of power where universal energy enters the human body. Once energy enters the chakras, they transition the vital universal energy into a form that our bodies can use for optimum functioning. There are typically seven basic chakras that we focus on – beginning at the base of the spine and working up the spine to the tip of the head.
Seven Chakras and Their Function in Your Body
First Chakra (Muladhara) - Root, grounding, basic needs
Second Chakra (Svadhisthana) – Sacral, pleasure, creative expression, vitality Third Chakra (Manipura) – Solar Plexus, personal power, motivation Fourth Chakra (Anahata) – Heart center; bridge between our body, mind, emotions, and spirit; love, connection Fifth Chakra (Vishuddha) - throat, verbal expression, highest truth Sixth Chakra (Ajna) – “third eye”, intuition Seventh Chakra (Sahaswara) - Crown, enlightenment, connection to higher selves and divine Are Chakras Really So Important to Your Success, Happiness, and Well-being?
According to an article by the Chopra Center, each of the seven main chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being.[i] The reason chakras are so important is that a blockage or imbalance of any of the seven energy centers has a ripple effect on the body’s overall energy, effecting processes necessary for optimum physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual functioning.
In my HK™ practice, one of the first things I’ll do during a session is check to see whether any of your chakras is blocked. Why? To put it simply, if your body doesn’t have adequate energy flow in a chakra it would be counter-effective to the work I’ll be doing to balance the energy flow through-out your body. Can Chakras Effect Your Creativity?
I’ve seen it in myself and with others who get “stuck” in a creative slump that there is often an energetic cause for the inability to move forward with ideas. If you are feeling like you have your foot on the brake and gas at the same time, it may just be that you have a blockage in one of the first 3 chakras.
Why these first three? The first relates to our being on “solid ground” and well rooted, like a plant springing forth from the earth. The second chakra is the basis of our creative expression – not the ideas themselves, but the actual desire to bring them forth into reality. Finally, the third chakra relates to our motivation to move forward, feeling safe and secure in the outcome rather than being overwhelmed with fear. Taken together, you can see how the first 3 chakras make up the well-spring from which ideas are realized. If they are out of balance or under-performing, we may feel like we are on shaky ground (worried about food, shelter, and other necessities of life) or have mixed feelings about our desire to follow our creative pursuits. If the third chakra is at issue, the fear of failure may overshadow any hope or desire to get your ideas out into the world. Keeping Your Chakras Balanced
Keeping your chakras balanced you will give you more energy and greater well-being overall. It’s really important after any energy balancing session to maintain optimum functioning of your chakras because you will see the effects of that modality magnified tremendously.
So, exactly how can you balance your own chakras? In future articles, I’ll be discussing how colors, crystals, and essential oils can all be used to help balance your chakras. For now, let’s focus on using the fact that thoughts can be a powerful tool you can use any time to balance your chakras. In the practice of HK™, we use words to help balance the chakras. When these words are spoken, the client will muscle test weak and we know that the corresponding chakra needs to be balanced and can then correct for it. How does this work? Each word triggers thoughts in the brain and it’s these thoughts that have the energy pattern related to each of the seven chakras. (See more on thoughts and the mind-body connection in my earlier blog article HERE) Outside of an HK™ or other energy balancing session, I recommend this article on Mind-Body-Green, which directs you on how to use simple affirmations to balance each of your seven chakras. You can also download my FREE Chakra Meditation Guide printable below as a handy reference to help you incorporate chakra balancing into your mind-body routine. Happy Balancing! xoxo Susan
